Pikes Peak Elder Justice Center
What problem does Pikes Peak Elder Justice Center solve?
Elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation are widespread but severely underreported. Older adults who experience mistreatment often have nowhere safe to go — traditional shelters aren't equipped for their needs, and the systems meant to protect them are fragmented across multiple agencies. Without coordinated intervention, victims remain trapped in dangerous situations with declining physical and mental health.
Who benefits from their work?
Adults age 60 and older who are victims of abuse, neglect, or exploitation in the Pikes Peak region. Individuals with disabilities who need safe shelter while recovering from mistreatment. Professionals and family members serving as fiduciaries (powers of attorney, guardians, conservators) who need training. Community agencies working elder abuse cases who need forensic support and coordination.
What makes their approach unique?
Founded in 2020, the Pikes Peak Elder Justice Center fills a critical gap in the elder care system. Their Elder Shelter program coordinates safe housing for adults 60 and over recovering from abuse or neglect. The Forensic Team operates as a one-stop-shop where agencies working elder abuse cases can access coordinated expertise. Behavioral health services address the emotional trauma of mistreatment, and their fiduciary education program trains the people entrusted with managing vulnerable adults' affairs. They partner with El Paso County Adult Protective Services, the SPRiNG Alliance, and the DU Knoebel Institute's Colorado Older Adults Financial Justice Coalition.
What does a donation accomplish?
$25 supports a behavioral health counseling session for an abuse survivor | $75 funds fiduciary training materials for a new guardian or conservator | $150 provides a night of safe shelter for an elder abuse victim | $500 supports a month of forensic team coordination on complex abuse cases
Where do they serve?
Colorado Springs, El Paso County, and the greater Pikes Peak region of Colorado.
We launched in 2020 to change that. Our mission is to support and enhance the safety, stability, and security of older adults in the Pikes Peak region and beyond. We envision a world where older adults are recognized, respected, and supported — where compassionate care and community advocacy allow them to live free from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Our Elder Shelter program coordinates safe housing for adults 60 and over, or those with a disability, while they recover from abuse or neglect. Our Forensic Team serves as a one-stop-shop where any agency working through an elder abuse case can access coordinated expertise from multiple disciplines. Our Behavioral Health services address the emotional and psychological trauma that comes with mistreatment. And our Fiduciary Education program trains the people entrusted with managing the affairs of vulnerable adults — powers of attorney, guardians, conservators — so they understand their responsibilities and obligations.
We partner closely with El Paso County Adult Protective Services, the SPRiNG Alliance, the DU Knoebel Institute's Colorado Older Adults Financial Justice Coalition, and the Pikes Peak Commission on Aging. Together, we're building a coordinated community response to elder abuse — because no one should spend their later years in fear.
