Globe Aware
What problem does Globe Aware solve?
Most people want to give back but don't know how to do it meaningfully — especially abroad. Traditional tourism misses the point, and long-term volunteer commitments aren't realistic for everyone. Globe Aware bridges that gap with structured, short-term volunteer programs that immerse participants in local communities while contributing to projects that promote cultural awareness and self-reliance rather than dependency.
Who benefits from their work?
Anyone looking for a meaningful travel experience — solo travelers, families, retirees, corporate teams, college students earning community service hours, church and service groups, and multigenerational families. Also serves the international communities that benefit from sustainable development projects across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe.
What makes their approach unique?
With over 23 years of operations and nearly 16,000 volunteer travelers served, Globe Aware holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations and has been featured on NBC Today Show, CNN, The New York Times, and PBS. Less than 12% of program fees go toward overhead. Their philosophy centers on sustainability and cultural awareness — teaching skills rather than creating reliance. Programs span 26 destinations across five continents, from sea turtle rescue in Costa Rica to elephant conservation in Thailand to community development in Ghana. The entire program contribution is tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers.
What does a donation accomplish?
$50 provides school supplies for a classroom in Guatemala | $150 funds a week of meals for a volunteer team working on community projects | $500 sponsors a Global Wings youth scholarship for a student who couldn't otherwise participate | $1,000 supports sustainable development infrastructure in a partner community
Where do they serve?
Worldwide — 26 destinations across Africa (Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe), Asia (Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Laos, Nepal, Bhutan, Philippines, China), Latin America and the Caribbean (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Galápagos, Cuba, Puerto Rico), and Eastern Europe (Romania). Headquarters in Dallas, Texas.
With programs across 26 destinations on five continents, we've connected more than 15,000 volunteers with meaningful service opportunities over 23 years. Our trips are designed for people who want to do more than sightsee — they want to contribute. Whether it's building homes, teaching English, supporting wildlife conservation, or providing medical outreach, every program is developed in partnership with local organizations who know their communities best.
We believe that travel should leave a place better than you found it. Our volunteers come home transformed — with broader perspectives, deeper empathy, and a renewed sense of purpose. And the communities they serve gain lasting improvements that continue long after the volunteers have returned home.
Globe Aware has been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic, CNN, and the Wall Street Journal. We're proud of that recognition, but we're prouder of the lives changed — both the volunteers' and the communities' — through every single trip.
