About Friendly Center

What problem does Friendly Center solve?

Orange County's reputation for wealth masks a harsh reality: nearly one in four children in the county lives below the poverty line. The cost of living is so high that a single layoff, medical bill, or unexpected emergency can push a working family into crisis overnight. For families trapped in generational poverty, the barriers compound — food insecurity, joblessness, mental health challenges, and lack of educational access feed into each other in a cycle that's nearly impossible to escape without coordinated support across multiple fronts at once.

Who benefits from their work?

Low-income children and families across Orange County, including working families in situational poverty, households dealing with food insecurity, individuals seeking employment or education, and families navigating mental health crises or housing instability. Services are offered in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Arabic, and Chinese.

What makes their approach unique?

Most food banks hand out food. Most job programs teach resumes. Friendly Center does both of those things and fifteen other things under the same roof — because poverty doesn't come in one flavor. Their wraparound model means a family can walk in for emergency groceries and also get connected to case management, mental health counseling, rental assistance, a high school equivalency program, job placement support, and youth workshops without being sent to five different agencies across town. The organization runs four resource centers in three cities and has been doing this work continuously for a hundred years, making it the oldest nonprofit in Orange County still operating under its original mission.

What does a donation accomplish?

Contributions support the full range of programs across all four family resource centers — from stocking the food pantry and providing rental and utility assistance to funding case management, mental health counseling, workforce training, and youth education. In 2024 alone, the organization served nearly 7,000 households, distributed over 184,000 pounds of food, provided case management to 265 families, and served more than 1,000 children through holiday distribution programs.

Where do they serve?

Orange County, California — operating four family resource centers across three cities, serving families throughout the county with more than 19 free programs and services.

Our Story
We've been at this for a hundred years, and the work has never been more urgent than it is right now.

Friendly Center started in 1924 when a group of men from a local bible study decided to do something about the poverty they saw among farm workers and their families in Orange County. That was it — no strategic plan, no capital campaign, no board of directors. Just people who saw a need and showed up.

A lot has changed since then. Orange County went from farmland to one of the most expensive places to live in the country. But the poverty didn't go away — it just got harder to see. Today, nearly a quarter of children in the county live below the poverty line. Working families are one emergency away from losing everything. And for families caught in generational poverty, the path out feels almost impossible when you're focused on surviving until tomorrow.

That's why we don't just do one thing. We run more than 19 free programs across four resource centers in three cities because poverty doesn't come with just one problem. A mom who comes in because she can't afford groceries this week might also need help paying rent, finding a job, getting her GED, connecting her kids to afterschool programs, and talking to a counselor about the stress that's been building for months. If we only hand her a bag of food and send her home, we haven't changed anything.

Our approach is wraparound — we meet the immediate need, then we stay with the family and address everything else that's keeping them stuck. Case management, mental health services, workforce development, youth education, rental assistance, food access. All under one roof, all free, all in the language families actually speak.

In 2024, we served nearly 7,000 households. We distributed over 184,000 pounds of food. We walked alongside 265 families through intensive case management. We made sure more than a thousand kids had something to open during the holidays.

We're not trying to be the biggest nonprofit in Orange County. We're trying to be the one that actually moves the needle for families in poverty — the same thing that group of guys from the bible study was trying to do in 1924. The scale has changed. The mission hasn't.
