Anaheim is one of the most diverse and densely populated cities in Orange County, but that diversity comes with complex needs. Smaller community organizations doing critical work often lack the funding and infrastructure to scale. Young people — especially those in under-resourced neighborhoods — face gaps in mentorship, career pathways, and mental health support. And when emergencies hit, whether personal or citywide, families need a local institution they can turn to quickly. There's a gap between what big government programs provide and what individual families and grassroots organizations actually need on the ground.
Who benefits from their work?
Anaheim residents across the board — from youth ages 12 to 18 who participate in the ACT Resiliency Collaborative, to families in crisis accessing emergency assistance, to the small nonprofits and community groups that receive grants to expand their own impact. The foundation acts as a hub that multiplies the effectiveness of everyone doing good work in the city.
What makes their approach unique?
The Anaheim Community Foundation isn't a direct service provider that competes with local nonprofits — it's the connective tissue that makes them all stronger. Through its grantmaking program, it funds community organizations that are already close to the problems. Through the ACT Youth Resiliency Collaborative, it coordinates a multi-sector partnership across business, nonprofit, and civic leaders to fill gaps in services for young people. And through initiatives like the Contigo Campaign and emergency assistance programs, it responds to immediate needs with local knowledge that national organizations simply don't have. A volunteer board of directors ensures that donations stay accountable and flow back into the community they came from.
What does a donation accomplish?

For four decades, that idea has guided everything we do. We're not the organization that shows up with a van full of supplies. We're the organization that finds the people who already have the van, figures out what they need to fill it, and connects them with the donors and partners who can make it happen. Our role is coordination, amplification, and trust.
When a small Anaheim nonprofit needs $5,000 to expand a program that's working, we provide grants. When local businesses want to invest in their community but don't know where the dollars will have the most impact, we guide them. When a family faces an emergency and the usual safety nets aren't enough, we step in through programs like our Contigo Campaign and emergency assistance fund.
One of the things we're proudest of is ACT — the Accelerate Change Together Youth Resiliency Collaborative. It's a partnership across business, nonprofit, and civic leaders focused on Anaheim youth ages 12 to 18. The young people in this city face real challenges: mental health pressures, limited career exposure, and neighborhoods where the path from school to a stable future isn't always obvious. ACT doesn't try to replace the organizations already doing this work. Instead, it connects them into a coordinated network so that a young person who walks into one program can be referred to exactly the right resource — workforce development, mental health support, college readiness, civic leadership — without falling through the cracks.
We're governed by a volunteer board of directors who live and work in Anaheim. That matters because it means the people making decisions about where funds go are the same people who drive these streets, shop at these stores, and send their kids to these schools. The foundation isn't something that happens to Anaheim from the outside. It's something the community built for itself.
Forty years in, the mission is the same: people, partnerships, and pride. We believe that when you invest in a community's own capacity to take care of its people, the returns compound in ways that no single program could match.
